How stars like Kaia Gerber, Dakota Johnson and Emma Roberts are influencing readers

You could not get two more different women on one screen. On the left: Dua Lipa, English-Albanian celebrity singer, songwriter, actress. On the right: Helen Garner, Australian writer. They are having a lively conversation of mutual respect, thoughtfulness and curiosity.

When approached for an interview for the singer’s Service95 Book Club, Garner had to ask her grandsons who Dua Lipa was. The boys were suitably gobsmacked. But despite the fact their worlds are poles apart, these two women appear to be getting on really well. They are discussing Garner’s book This House of Griefher 2014 account of the trial of Robert Farquhar, accused of murder after he drove his three sons into a dam.

Celebrity attention to books means attention from many readers around the world, no doubt discovering this Australian author for the first time through Dua Lipa’s book club.

I used to be a bit snooty about celebrity book clubs, though not as snooty as Jonathan Franzen, who notoriously refused to appear on Oprah Winfrey’s TV show after she picked his novel The Corrections as a must-read. (He later apologised). But after seeing the Garner-Lipa interview, and after checking out some other celebrity book clubs, I’ve changed my mind. These women (it’s mostly women) are doing a great job.

Take model Kaia Gerber’s book club, which operates through the website LibraryScience. You won’t see a typical bestseller list here, she says. Instead, she’s highlighting “young voices, debut writers, translations, contemporary classics”. I particularly like the way she’s choosing classics such as Francois Sagan’s Hello sadnessMarguerite Duras’ The Lover or Djuna Barnes’ short stories in I Am Alien to Life – books written in different eras and in different societies which nevertheless resonate with young readers trying to come to terms with life, love and expectations.

Then there’s Dakota Johnson’s Tea Time Book Club, which reaches into very different realms from her role in the film of that bestselling but much reviled title Fifty Shades of Grey.

Reese Witherspoon’s book club features book with women at the centre of the story.

A typical pick for her is a book of short stories by Fumio Yamamoto, The Dilemmas of Working Womenfirst released in 2000 and recently translated from Japanese. This is described as “a spiky, edgy collection” and “a feminist, anti-capitalist modern classic”.

Other celebrity book clubs include Belletrist, run by actress Emma Roberts; and Between Two Books, run by Florence Welch, lead singer of Florence and The Machine. One of her top picks is Opposed Positions by Gwendoline Riley. A review in The Guardian says that its narrator “should be really annoying, but isn’t” and comments that Riley gives us first-person narratives from “people who are a lot like her, being writers and drifters”.

The complainant approached the police after he failed to receive returns on his investments, he said, adding that a case has been registered under the Information Technology Act, reported PTI.

  • Haaland, Man City still Champions League contenders

Haaland, Man City still Champions League contenders

MANCHESTER, England — Pep Guardiola seemed slightly annoyed Wednesday when he said Manchester City are “apparently” not one of the favorites for this season’s UEFA Champions League. It was an answer that hinted he suspects his team has already been written off.

Perhaps it will take more than a 2-0 win over 10-man Napoli, who had Giovanni Di Lorenzo sent off in the first half, to worry the likes of Paris Saint-Germain, Liverpool, Barcelona and Real Madrid. But if you’re going to conquer Europe, beating the champions of Italy in your first game of the league phase isn’t a bad place to start.

“I’m really, really pleased,” Guardiola said after the match. “When it was 11 against 10 we made a really good performance against a team that has the DNA of the Italian teams, defending very well. How aggressive they are, how strong their mentality is.

“I’m really pleased because after 10 against 11 you can be more anxious and in a hurry, but it was completely the opposite. Every pass was with intention and every moment was with intention. Antonio’s teams are always really, really tough to beat.”

O’Hanlon ranks the Champions League field: Can anyone stop PSG or Barcelona?
    – Karlsen: Who are the breakout U21 Champions League players you don’t know?
    – Ogden: Champions League storylines: Arsenal win it all, PSG repeat, or Barca rebound?

City looked destined to win after just 21 minutes when Di Lorenzo was dismissed for a foul on Erling Haaland. German referee Felix Zwayer initially waved away the City appeals, but Haaland was sure he had been denied a clear goal-scoring opportunity. Haaland jumped up immediately and could be seen mouthing “red card” in the referee’s direction.

Zwayer was sent to the monitor by VAR Christian Dingert, and after a couple of replays, he finally decided he agreed with the Norwegian striker. From that point on, Napoli were up against it.

Napoli manager Antonio Conte did his best to frustrate City. He even cut short Kevin De Bruyne‘s Etihad Stadium comeback, sacrificing the Belgian midfielder for defender Mathías Olivera. That and a string of saves from Vanja Milinkovic-Savic helped keep Guardiola’s team at bay until after halftime, when a wonderfully crafted move involving Rodri and Phil Foden broke the deadlock. Foden’s delicate chip over Napoli’s defense was delicious and got the finish it deserved from Haaland. City’s No. 9 caught the flight of the ball perfectly and glanced his header into the net.

It was Haaland’s eighth goal in his past three games after getting five for Norway against Moldova and two against Manchester United on Sunday. It also earned him a place in Champions League history as he became the fastest to reach 50 goals in the competition. He did it in just 49 games, beating the previous record set in 2007 by Ruud van Nistelrooy, who needed 62 games. It’s a remarkable achievement for a player who is still only 25.

City — as Guardiola is clearly aware — are behind Liverpool, Paris Saint-Germain, Arsenal, Barcelona and Real Madrid in the Champions League betting. But with a striker like Haaland, they will always be in with a chance.

Goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma has settled in quickly, Rodri has started three games in a row, and Foden looks like he has rediscovered the zip and the spark missing for much of last season. All three have conquered this competition before.

City were so comfortable against Napoli that when Jérémy Doku got the second goal on 65 minutes, Guardiola turned his attention to Arsenal. With the game won, Rodri and Haaland were quickly replaced ahead of Sunday’s trip to the Emirates.

“[Haaland’s] numbers speak for themselves,” Guardiola said. “We are lucky to have him. Van Nistelrooy, [Robert] Lewandowski, the two monsters Cristiano [Ronaldo] and [Lionel] Messi. For Erling to be there is unbelievable.

“You cannot imagine how we miss Phil [last season]. The last two games have been the Phil that we know. When he played close to Erling two years ago Phil was the best player in the Premier League.

“He’s dangerous close to the box. We are so happy because I know he is happy and his joy and his life is fine. The rest is natural.”

Napoli were City’s first Champions League opponents when they made their debut in the revamped tournament in 2011. In the 14 years since, City have gone from novices to experts. It culminated in Istanbul in 2023 when they lifted the trophy for the first time.

Last season marked a blip as they lost five of their final seven games — as many as they’d lost in the previous 61 — and failed to reach the last 16 for the time since 2012-13. The drop-off has contributed to a feeling that City are something of an unknown quantity ahead of this season’s campaign, particularly when held up against PSG, Barcelona and the rest.

Speaking this week, Guardiola seemed irked that the bookmakers have forgotten the Champions League pedigree that saw City reach two finals in three years between 2021 and 2023 and another semifinal in 2022. Favorites or not, with Guardiola in charge and Haaland up front, City can never be discounted.

  • After series finale, Jenny Han announces new film for Amazon

After series finale, Jenny Han announces new film for Amazon

There are flashbacks aplenty as Conrad emerges in Belly’s new life, a reminder of her childhood self. He even gives her a small jar of sand from Cousins Beach, a scene that had many of us groaning (mostly me). In the end, Han gives viewers what most of us expected: Bonrad. But not before a Bridget Jones-style run from an apartment leading to a confession of love on a train.

    Loading

I’m glad Han didn’t make their reunion an easy one, or a tidy epilogue. If you weren’t rooting for them to get together initially, you certainly are when Conrad’s forlorn face leaves Belly’s apartment after they have sex and discuss his dead mother.

Fans are already reacting with relative glee. As expected, Team Conrad won. I’ll admit, I wanted them to get together, too.

But it was also a bit boring to see Belly return to Cousins in a short scene at the end. She’s ditched her red lipstick for a muted colour as they survey the garden of the stately beach house they spent their childhood summers in. I would’ve liked for Belly to retain her new cosmopolitan identity alongside her relationship, rather than falling back in lockstep with a Fisher boy.

Still, the predictable ending is part and parcel of a romantic series based on a YA trilogy; we want to know there’ll be an emotional payoff after the painful journey.

Jeremiah’s ending is more disappointing. Interspersed with Paris are scenes back in Cousins, where the younger brother has assumed the role of irritable chef, cooking a rehearsal for a large-scale function while things keep going awry. Perhaps this just reminds him of another big event where things went awry.

Not helping the matter is his newly single dad, Adam (Tom Everett Scott), who keeps bringing his son’s botched wedding champagne. While Steven (Sean Kaufman) and Taylor (Rain Spencer) sort out their own drama, Jeremiah finds a romantic pairing with his ex-colleague and current roommate: Denise (Isabella Briggs).

It’s hard to believe a character who eschews mediocre men in her finance career would find the guy freeloading on her couch a “10”, and their pairing is a very convenient way for us to feel less sorry for Jeremiah.

There’s no doubt this final season has cemented Tsitp as a global phenomenon. In just one week, after the season three premiere aired, 25 million people watched it worldwide. People gathered for watch parties, at home or in pubsto yell at Belly. Viewers have been so invested in the fictional choices of these very fictional characters, at times to the point of online toxicity.

From a narrative standpoint, it makes sense that viewers feel more invested. For much of season one and two, the tension between Belly, Jeremiah, and Conrad is an undercurrent — in season three, it’s a full-force rapid.

It’s by now well known that the show is most popular with Millennial and Gen Z women. What’s less settled is why. Everyone has a theory: it’s escapism! It’s the setting (the same location as Dawson’s Creek and One Tree Hill)! It’s the soundtrack! (I’ll admit, when Bon Iver’s Skinny Love started playing, I was instantly transported to the awkward realities of being a teenager in 2007).

When the final credits rolled, my friend said: “What do we do now?”

The adolescent summers of our collective imagination are officially over. It’s time to quit pretending we’re teenage girls. There are emails to write. There are bills to pay. There’s … a film confirmed by Prime to continue Belly and Conrad’s chapter, as Jenny Han’s letter to viewers hinted at the end: “Maybe we’ll meet again one summer in Cousins.”

    Loading

For me, this ending was enough. But will I dust off my spaghetti straps and watch the film? Of course.

The Summer I Turned Pretty is streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

Mumbai: Jogeshwari pharmacy college in trouble again for overcharging students

Barely two years after it was first pulled up, a Jogeshwari-based pharmacy college has once again landed in hot water for charging students more than the officially approved fees. In August 2025, around 30 BPharm students of HK Pharmacy College approached the Fee Regulation Authority (FRA), alleging that the institute was demanding Rs 21,000 annually over the sanctioned fee of Rs 1,34,000, which already covers tuition and development charges, as displayed on the college website.

“We have been paying the extra amount via cash or UPI. Whenever we ask why, we are told vaguely that it is for the betterment of students,” said a third-year BPharm student. The complainants demanded a refund of Rs 42,000 collected over two years. FRA officials confirmed they received the complaint, but it was later withdrawn. “The college heads assured us that our issues would be resolved. Under pressure, we took back our complaint,” said another student.

This is not the first time the institute has faced such allegations. FRA sources told mid-day that in October 2024, junior students had complained about an additional R26,000 being levied under 13 different heads, including “alumni fees,” “impulse magazines and journals,” “scientific activities,” “university exam fees,” and “sessional and practical exams.” Nearly 40 complainants then received refunds.

Despite that, no action was taken. “Since the college refunded the excess amount, the FRA resolved the 2024 case,” said FRA member Adv Dharmendra Mishra. But this time, the authority may not let the matter slide. “The college will be called in for a meeting next week, and if discrepancies are found, penal action may follow,” Mishra added.

Repeated attempts to contact Principal Dr Tushar Lokhande went unanswered. When mid-day tried to contact Chairman Wasim Javed, the college office said, “The principal is the only responding authority in such matters.”

Maharashtra govt makes e-KYC mandatory for Ladki Bahin scheme beneficiaries

The Maharashtra government has made e-KYC mandatory for beneficiaries of the Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin scheme, giving them two months to complete the process, reported news agency PTI.

A government resolution (GR) was issued regarding this on Thursday, an official said.

The Mukhyamantri Ladki Bahin Yojana provides monthly assistance of Rs 1,500 to women in the age group of 21-65, whose annual family income is not more than Rs 2.5 lakh.

Women and Child Development Minister Aditi Tatkare on Thursday said, “An e-KYC facility has been made available on the web portal, `ladakibahin.maharashtra.gov.in`, for all beneficiaries of the scheme. They are requested to complete the e-KYC process in the next two months.”

This process is simple and convenient, and to maintain transparency in the Ladki Bahin scheme and ensure regular benefits to eligible women, everyone should complete it, she said in a post on X.

This process will also be useful to avail the benefits of other government schemes in the future, Tatkare said.

According to the GR, eligible women must complete their verification and authentication within two months to receive the monthly assistance in their bank accounts.

Similarly, if Aadhaar authentication is not done, the benefits will be withheld, it said.

Beneficiaries will have to carry out the e-KYC process compulsorily every year, the GR stated.

The government had recently revealed that nearly 26.34 lakh ineligible beneficiaries, including men, had enrolled in the Ladki Bahin scheme and received the monthly allowance.

As per government data, 2.25 crore women receive money under the scheme, which was launched in July 2024.

Earlier, The Maharashtra government won`t stop the popular `Ladki Bahin` programme and instead is committed to creating one crore `Lakhpati Didis`, who will earn Rs 1 lakh every year, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Wednesday, reported news agency PTI.

The campaign aims to ensure that every village receives the benefits of the central and state schemes.

Maharashtra will not prosper unless villages in the state register progress, he said. “It is not possible until the poor, labourers, and villages prosper,” he said.

The CM asserted that the `Mukhyamantri Ladki Bahin Yojana`, under which eligible women beneficiaries receive monthly assistance of Rs 1,500, won`t be discontinued.

“Some people claimed that the Ladki Bahin scheme will be scrapped. Our sisters should not believe them. We won`t just stop at providing Rs 1,500. We are starting women-led credit societies in villages, which will provide employment opportunities to women,” he said, reported PTI.

The government aims to create one crore `Lakhpati Didis`, women who will earn Rs 1 lakh or more in a year, he said, adding that women are being provided with an interest-free loan of Rs 1 lakh, reported PTI.

“Our sisters won`t subsist on only Rs 1,500 but will be self-employed and give jobs to others. The schemes for Dalit and Adivasis will also be implemented under this campaign. The government will give away awards of Rs 250 crore to well-performing villages through this abhiyan,” Fadnavis said, reported PTI.

  • Dolphins battle but refuse moral victories after loss to Bills

Dolphins battle but refuse moral victories after loss to Bills

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — The Miami Dolphins take no pride in a loss, no matter how close the game is.

The Dolphins were 12½-point underdogs entering Thursday night’s game against the Buffalo Bills but hung with the five-time reigning AFC East champions for three-and-a-half quarters before a pair of critical mistakes cost them in a 31-21 loss.

“No moral victories, that’s for sure,” quarterback Tua Tagovailoa said after the game. “There’s definitely some things that we can take away that are good and up to par with our standard of how we operate within our offense. … Never good to lose, regardless of how a certain individual may have felt they performed. This is a team sport. We win together, we lose together.”

The Dolphins fell to 0-3 this season and have lost seven straight games against Buffalo. The loss comes after a week of speculation regarding coach Mike McDaniel’s job security, but for most of the game, Miami did not play like a team whose coach is on his way out.

After a 52-yard opening kick return from Dee Eskridge, the Dolphins scored on their opening drive for the first time this season but allowed 14 straight points to Buffalo immediately after. The Bills appeared ready to stretch their lead even further midway through the second quarter, but Matt Prater missed a 39-yard field goal and the Dolphins tied the score with a 16-play drive just before halftime.

Miami tied the score again with 12 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter and forced a punt on the Bills’ ensuing drive; defensive tackle Zach Sieler was flagged for roughing the punter, however, paving the way for the Bills’ game-winning touchdown.

“I’ve got to be better,” Sieler said after the game. “I can’t be making stupid errors like that.”

Tagovailoa threw an interception on the following drive to effectively seal the game.

The Dolphins’ quarterback said there was no added emphasis this week to prove anything to outside critics, but that the team wanted to “get this thing right for each other.”

He said there were some positives to take away from the game; Miami converted 10-of-15 third-down attempts and set a new season high with 130 rushing yards.

But McDaniel said that a loss is a loss, and he didn’t feel any pride seeing his team compete in a game it ultimately lost.

“I’m never proud of a loss. We came here to win,” he said. “I refuse to take moral victories as the head coach of the Miami Dolphins.”

Dolphins fans flew a banner over Hard Rock Stadium before last week’s loss to the New England Patriots calling for the team to fire McDaniel and general manager Chris Grier. McDaniel said he didn’t believe the gesture was “personal” and that he wasn’t spending time worrying about his job security.

Wide receiver Tyreek Hill, who caught his first touchdown of the season Thursday, said the Dolphins “did something a lot of people didn’t expect us to do” by playing a close game in Buffalo. He said he believes the team is “moving in the right direction.”

He also spoke to his coach’s fiery demeanor after the game and praised him for his leadership and playcalling.

“I love Coach McDaniel. I love him to death, man,” Hill said. “Obviously, he gave me a chance to come to Miami and play, and I don’t take that for granted. To see how he coached and to see how he led me today, it was a beautiful thing to see. So can’t wait until next week.”

This marks the Dolphins’ first 0-3 start to a season since 2019, when they finished 5-11. Of the 117 NFL teams since 2000 to start a season 0-3, only the Houston Texans in 2018 made the playoffs.

Miami isn’t focused on history as it prepares for its Week 4 game against the New York Jets on “Monday Night Football” on Sept. 29, but Hill said the Dolphins aren’t ready to quit on this season.

“It’s all about how do you want to be remembered?” he said. “Do you want to be the 0-3 team that just was like, ‘Hey, we just going to throw in the towel and just say hey, it’s over with,’ or are we going to be remembered as the team that started off 0-3 and found a way to turn it around going into the fourth game?

“We got great captains, great leadership who do a great job of setting the standard every day at practice and also in the locker room. So we got a beautiful thing going right now.”
