Mumbai: Man assaults BEST bus driver in Bandra road rage

The police said that a 42-year-old man allegedly assaulted a BEST bus driver in Bandra in the early hours of Wednesday after a minor road accident involving his car, reported news agency PTI.

The incident occurred when the bus driver began driving toward Bandra Station after a traffic signal turned green. A car, speeding from St Andrews Road, suddenly swerved in front of the bus. The front of the bus collided with the car, causing minor damage, reported PTI.

When the driver stepped out to inspect the damage, the motorist and a woman accompanying him exited the vehicle, hurled abuses, and physically assaulted him.

An FIR was registered against the car driver, SV Peter, for the assault, reported PTI.

The bus driver then contacted the police emergency helpline. A patrolling team arrived at the scene and detained the motorist, who was later released after being served a notice, the official added.

Man kills father after fight over money for exam fees; arrested

In another case, a man allegedly killed his 70-year-old father after a dispute over not being given money to pay the fees for a competitive exam in Maharashtra`s Latur district, police said, reported PTI.

The incident occurred in Hinpallner village on Tuesday, following which the accused was arrested, they said, reported PTI.

The victim`s family used to survive by selling vegetables and working as daily wage labourers.

The 24-year-old accused, identified as Ajay Panchal, had completed his education up to class 12. He was preparing for police recruitment exams and had been repeatedly asking his father for money to pay the fees for it, according to an official from Chakur police station, reported PTI.

On Monday night, heavy rains soaked the household`s firewood used as fuel and rendered it unusable. The wife of the victim, Devidas Kashiram Panchal, then purchased a gas cylinder to meet immediate needs, reported PTI.

When Ajay learned about the purchase, he confronted his parents, arguing they had money for the gas cylinder, but not for his exam fees.

His mother tried to pacify him and told him she would arrange the money by morning, but Ajay demanded it immediately, the official said.

Frustrated and unable to get the money, the accused argued with his father early Tuesday morning, reported PTI.

In a fit of rage, he then allegedly struck his father on the head with a wooden stick. The elderly man died on the spot, the official said.

Upon hearing the commotion, neighbours rushed to the scene.

Based on a complaint filed by the victim`s wife, the police registered a case of murder against Ajay and arrested him, the official said.

Former NC State athletes file lawsuit alleging sexual abuse

RALEIGH, N.C. — Fourteen former NC State male athletes have filed a civil lawsuit in state court alleging sexual abuse under the guise of treatment and harassment by the Wolfpack’s former director of sports medicine, expanding a case that began with a federal lawsuit from a single athlete three years ago.

The lawsuit filed Wednesday evening in Wake County Superior Court alleges years of misconduct by Robert Murphy Jr., including improper touching of the genitals during massages and intrusive observation while collecting urine samples during drug testing.

Murphy, who was at NC State from 2012 to 2022, is among the nine defendants named individually. The others are school officials accused of negligence in their oversight roles in preventing abuse or adequately responding to concerns raised to them about Murphy’s conduct.

Twelve athletes are “John Doe” plaintiffs to protect anonymity, while two former men’s soccer players are named. One is Benjamin Locke, who filed the original complaint in August 2022. Two other athletes had followed with their own federal lawsuits in February and April 2023. The Associated Press typically doesn’t identify those who say they have been sexually assaulted or abused unless the person has spoken publicly, which Locke has done.

Durham-based attorney Kerry Sutton, who has represented the plaintiffs in the previous and new lawsuits, filed to dismiss those pending Title IX lawsuits before moving the case to state-level jurisdiction — though now with 11 additional plaintiffs.

The new lawsuit outlines similar allegations in terms of Murphy’s conduct and the school’s response, including that concerns about Murphy’s conduct reached former athletic director Debbie Yow and other senior athletic officials but nothing substantive was done to prevent misconduct or Murphy continuing to work with athletes.

“These 14 athletes have come forward together hoping to encourage others abused by Rob Murphy to see it wasn’t just them, they did nothing wrong, and NCSU should have protected them,” Sutton said in a statement. “A culture of fear in the NCSU athletics department led to this tragic set of circumstances. Athletes afraid of losing their scholarship or their spot on the team, trainers afraid of reporting their boss, coaches afraid of getting involved, directors afraid of harming NCSU’s reputation. Murphy took advantage of those fears to get away with abusing what we believe may turn out to be hundreds of former Wolfpack athletes.”

Jared Hammett, a Raleigh-based attorney working with Murphy in the earlier cases, didn’t immediately return messages from the AP requesting comment Thursday. An attorney who previously worked with Murphy said in 2022 that Murphy offered “appropriate” medical procedures but “nothing that was ever of a sexual nature.”

NC State didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. Yow declined to comment, deferring to the school, in a text message to the AP on Thursday morning.

A Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson said on Wednesday that China strongly opposes Israel’s escalation of military operations in Gaza and condemns all actions that harm civilians and violate international law.

According to media reports, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated in Israel on September 15 that the United States supports Israel’s plans to dismantle Hamas. On September 16, the Israeli military launched a ground offensive and conducted large-scale airstrikes on Gaza City. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) estimate that about 40 percent of Gaza’s population has so far left. At the same time, the United Nations (UN) independent international commission of inquiry reported that Israel has committed genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

When asked for comments at a daily news briefing, spokesperson Lin Jian said China is deeply concerned about further escalation of tensions and opposes the relevant party fueling the flames.

The Chinese side urges Israel to heed the strong concerns voiced by the international community, halt its military operations in Gaza immediately, achieve a full and lasting ceasefire as soon as possible, and prevent an even larger humanitarian crisis, Lin noted.

“We hope relevant parties will act in the interest of regional peace and stability, uphold a just position and responsible attitude, and play a constructive role in deescalating the situation,” added Lin.

  • BMC installs bollards on footpaths in Dadar and Matunga to keep motorists away

BMC installs bollards on footpaths in Dadar and Matunga to keep motorists away

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Thursday started work on redesigning the existing bollards on the footpaths of Baba Saheb Ambedkar Road, near the Dadar and Matunga areas. The bollards have been installed to restrict two-wheeler motorists from reaching the footpaths and jeopardising pedestrian safety.

BMC`s work came in response to a letter written to the civic body`s F/North ward office by the Matunga division of the Mumbai Traffic Police, following complaints from residents and subsequent follow-up by Mid-Day

Mid-Day on Thursday, a reported on the issue, highlighting the safety hazards from unauthorised parking on footpaths and racing bikers on the footpaths in this area, which has among the widest footpaths in the city, close to 4 metres in width.

Residents of the area pointed out that since the Elphinstone Bridge has been demolished by the civic body, BA Road gets choked not only by traffic going towards the island city but also by motorists commuting from East to West Mumbai.

The congestion has augmented the problem of bikers trying to get up on the footpath to cut short their commute time by a few minutes. Even though there are `no parking` boards installed by the civic body along all footpaths in the area, Mid-Day noticed during a spot visit on Tuesday that two-wheelers are parked along the footpath near Khodadad Circle and in Matunga.

The traffic police had highlighted 18 spots where riders take the footpath instead of the carriageway, seeking BMC`s intervention in setting up zig-zag barricades. The work on this infrastructure started on Thursday morning.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Wednesday that China and the Republic of Korea (ROK) should jointly oppose trade protectionism during talks with ROK Foreign Minister Cho Hyun in Beijing.

Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, noted that China and ROK have benefited from economic globalization.

Amid rising unilateralism and acts of bullying in today’s world, Wang stressed that the two sides should jointly oppose trade protectionism and defend the global system of free trade.

Wang said China maintains stability and continuity in its policy towards the ROK, expressing hope that the two sides will treat each other with sincerity, enhance mutual trust, deepen cooperation and achieve win-win results, while properly addressing sensitive issues.

During the meeting, Wang also said that China is willing to work with the international community, including the ROK, to defend the UN-centered international system and the outcomes of victory in World War II.

Noting that the ROK values the momentum in improving bilateral relations, Cho said the ROK is willing to further strengthen high-level exchanges with China, deepen cooperation in trade, culture and other areas, and accelerate negotiations on the ROK-China and ROK-China-Japan free trade agreements.

Both sides agreed to coordinate and support each other in holding the APEC meetings. The ROK and China will host the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting this year and next year respectively.

  • Navi Mumbai Police invoke MCOCA provisions against drug gang busted in July

Navi Mumbai Police invoke MCOCA provisions against drug gang busted in July

Navi Mumbai Police have invoked the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) against a drug trafficking gang, an officer said on Thursday.

This marks the first-of-its-kind crackdown since the Maharashtra government, on July 8, officially classified the manufacture, possession, transport, and sale of narcotics as offences under the category of “organised crimes”, news agency PTI reported.

The move signals a tougher approach by law enforcement agencies in the state to tackle the growing menace of drug networks by using more powerful legal tools available under MCOCA.

On July 11, the Navi Mumbai Police`s Anti Narcotics Cell had conducted a raid on a flat in Digha, leading to the arrest of Usha Roshan Naik, Shailash Basanna Naik alias Pillu, Jyoti Nilesh Naik, Nilesh Basanna Naik, Roshan Basanna Naik, and Shantabai Kisan Karandekar, for the alleged possession of 252 grams of mephedrone worth Rs 75.69 lakh, the officer said.

“A case under the NDPS Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita was registered at the time at Rabale police station. A probe showed the gang, under Shantabai Kisan Karandekar, was engaged in large-scale drug trafficking for several years. It was also involved in crimes like murder, assaults,” the official informed.

On the directives of Navi Mumbai Police Commissioner Milind Bharambe, it was decided to invoke the MCOCA provisions against the drug trafficking gang, an official release said, adding that citizens can assist in the fight against narcotics by providing information on the dedicated helpline number 8828112112

Mumbai cyber cops bust international job scam; victims were forced into cyber slavery, says police

Mumbai`s South Cyber Police Station officials on Wednesday said that they have arrested a 28-year-old man allegedly involved in trafficking Indian job seekers to Southeast Asia and forcing them into cyber slavery.

The accused, identified as Salman Munir Sheikh, was nabbed from Nayanagar in Mira Road on Wednesday, following a months-long manhunt.

Police said that Sheikh allegedly lured young Indians with promises of lucrative overseas jobs, only to hand them over to Chinese syndicates running fraudulent call centres in Laos.

According to officials, the case began in August 2024 when a resident of Antop Hill approached the police. While searching for a data entry job on LinkedIn, the complainant came into contact with Sheikh, who offered him a job in Thailand with a promised salary of Rs 70,000 per month. Trusting the offer, the complainant and his friend each paid Rs 30,000 for visas and tickets.

On February 9, 2024, Sheikh accompanied them to Bangkok, along with three other recruits. From there, with the help of a Chinese woman, he transported all five jobseekers across the border into Laos, where he handed them over to a Chinese handler. Their passports were seized, and they were forced to carry out online scams and extortion activities via WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram.

“They were held captive and told to pay 20,000 Chinese Yuan (approximately Rs 2.3 lakh) as ransom for their release. When one of them was unable to arrange the money, Sheikh allegedly trafficked two more Indians in exchange for freeing him,” said a senior police official.

The victim eventually returned to India and filed a complaint. Based on confidential inputs, police traced Sheikh to Mira Road, where he was arrested.

  • MLB orders down period for teams’ monitoring of amateur players

MLB orders down period for teams’ monitoring of amateur players

Major League Baseball is banning team officials from watching amateur players or collecting data on them for a monthslong period over the winter, warning executives that “the amateur baseball calendar is putting young players at dramatic risk of future injury,” according to a memo obtained by ESPN.

In a seven-page document distributed to high-ranking personnel with all 30 MLB teams, the league said it hoped its Amateur Recovery Period Policy — which covers high school juniors and seniors from Oct. 15 to Jan. 15 and college players from Nov. 15 to Jan. 15 — will “alleviate the pressure on young players to forego rest and recovery, curb overuse, and keep players healthier as they strive for a future in professional baseball.”

During the down period, team employees will be barred from seeing any player covered by the policy in a baseball setting or from trying to procure video or third-party data on players, according to the memo. Should employees run afoul of the policy, the memo said, they could be fined, suspended or placed permanently on the game’s ineligible list while their teams could face sanctions in the draft or international amateur signings.

The policy forbids team employees from seeing games, showcases, training sessions “and any other activities related to throwing, hitting, catching or fielding.” Video as well as ball-tracking, bat-tracking and biomechanical data are likewise outlawed during what the league deemed a “recovery period.”

“MLB encourages players to use this period for rest, recovery and training for next season, rather than for high-intensity, maximum-effort activities,” the memo said.

The policy grew out of MLB’s December report on pitching injuries across all levels of the sport. A series of high-profile arm injuries prompted MLB to talk with more than 200 people to better understand the cause, and one of the recommendations from experts was to regulate a baseball calendar that now sees year-round, high-effort training by amateurs and an industry filled with offseason events.

Elbow injuries to players before they enter into major league organizations have become commonplace, and while the cause differs for each player, studies have linked year-round play to an increased risk of long-term damage. A July study in The American Journal of Sports Medicine said that more than 80% of pitchers who participated in MLB’s 2023 combine “had some abnormality within their ulnar collateral ligament” — which, when it tears, requires Tommy John surgery — and three-quarters of pitchers exhibited tearing within their shoulder.

Teams generally are not as active scouting amateurs during the winter as in the months leading up to the July amateur draft. Still, the proliferation of winter tournaments in warm-weather states and showcase events — in which players attempt to throw at high velocities to impress scouts, analysts and college coaches — have encouraged players to train for maximum-effort throws outside of typical competitive environments.

With “broad support,” the memo said, from scouting directors, medical experts, college coaches and others, the policy will begin next month — two days after the end of Perfect Game’s WWBA World Championship, a high school event regarded as one of the biggest on the amateur calendar.

Players are not restricted from participating in winter events, but by prohibiting team personnel from engaging beyond meeting a player at home with his family, MLB’s policy could affect dozens of events held by Perfect Game and Prep Baseball Report, the two companies that control the amateur space. If players send an organization unsolicited video or data during the down period, the team is required to notify MLB within 24 hours.

The policy does not cover agents, who are regulated by the MLB Players Association and often use winter events to scout players as young as 13 years old.
